When I look back over my past 20 years of being an art consultant, custom picture framer and now, a “naked wall expert,” there is one situation that has not changed. When homeowners are faced with “naked” walls they sometimes panic. I’ve always seen my role as the person who can offer solutions that will turn their house into a home. It is very sad when clients comment that they’ve been in their house for a number of years and NOTHING has been hung on the walls. Not only did they panic, they froze.

During my interview process I always find out what collections, if any, the homeowner already possesses. Can the pieces within be “tweaked” to fit the new domicile? Perhaps the artwork is fantastic, but was custom framed in 1968. Obviously, we could proceed to update the artwork using fresh matting and new moulding, provided that the client still has a love affair with the piece.

People invariably have wonderful grist for the framing mill. It just takes someone with vision to look at the “stuff” in the antique chest and design matting and framing to assist in getting whatever it is out of the closet and on the wall. In my opinion a house is not a home until there is evidence that actual people with their own unique history live there. Have you ever gone to someone’s home and each room has a suite of fantastic furniture, but the room looks sterile? I guarantee that if there are wedding pictures, children’s artwork, and or antique family photos on the walls the house will instantly become a home.

Some examples of “found art” are: antique christening gowns, ancestors’ naturalization papers, scraps of fabric, bills of sale, maps, photos of the town the home is located in, antique postcards, love letters, etc. I’m sure you get the idea. Here is another great idea. How about a multiple opening mat which can be filled with pictures from your latest European trip? A clever custom framer would also offer to incorporate additional memorabilia which would pertain to the piece being framed. Get new pillows and a fluffy throw and the room is now inviting and cozy.

I’m sure you will enjoy the conversations that arise when people come to your home and want to know the “back” story to the pieces hanging on the walls. I personally have 35 antique family photos over the sideboard in my dining room. The only problem is that dinner can get cold when people won’t be seated for the meal because they are fascinated with my “wall of fame.”

This weekend look for all the photos of the “Moms” in your life. Maybe a design using multiple generations will be just the unique piece which will show your love and good taste all in one.

Couples Share Decorating Stress

Traditionally, women have been responsible for choosing the colors, designs and themes for the home. Remember looking at china patterns? There were so many to choose from, not to mention dealing with the dreaded bridal registry. The stress was just too much. Most of my friends chose bland, simple designs based on fear of making a mistake.

Well, welcome to 2010. My couple-clients make most design decisions as a team and consequently there is a lot less stress, right? Don’t you believe it! While it’s nice to see couples sharing the stress, it’s still stressful. It doesn’t have to be that way. I am here to tell you decorating your domain, especially wall cover & art pieces should be fun. Remember this, there are no completely right or wrong answers. This is the “grey” area we strive for in life. Oh, there are some very basic rules-of-the-game, but believe me….you must trust your gut.

If your home (first or second) is filled with basic “contractor” white walls, don’t despair. In the old days you could go to the local paint store and find out what the latest “trends” are and get a trusty 2” X 2” paint chip. I recommend first, look in your closet and drawers. What colors do you buy to wear? Chances are those are your pallet. Trust yourself.

I spoke with “Mike” from Lindsey’s Paint & Paper this afternoon. Guess what, Moss Green is still big. Remember when it was Avocado & Burnt Orange? (You are old as I am!) Mike mentioned they offer neat little sample jars of paint. From one little jar you can paint a 4’ X 4’ area of the wall and live with the color. It’s best to do this at least 24 hours before you decide, as colors can change a great deal under different lighting situations throughout the day and under artificial light at night. Now this is a great plan, unless you just don’t have any clue. “The record holder for our store used 39 sample jars until she was satisfied.” I wondered how she picked her china pattern.

After months of anticipation, The Framed Art Superstore in North Conway has received their Art-A-Ron-Dack Chairs from Dianne Mello and Sally Dinsmore.


The chairs are being auctioned off as part of a fundraiser with the Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce.


Local artists have painted forty Adirondack chairs that are spread throughout town. Attached to each chair is a clip board for the silent auction.


Dianne Mello, continuing in the vintage style that has made her famous, has produced her very first Summer vintage scene.


Dianne's "People's Choice" winning chair features a couple lazily rowing along in their canoe in an image that captures the fun and relaxation that keeps visitors coming back to our valley.

Sally Dinsmore continues her tradition of capturing the true beauty of the valley with her waterfall, cascading over and down the chair and even onto the arms.

It's a scene that whisks your thoughts to the old swimming hole, enjoying pure Summer bliss (well, at least that's where it whisks my mind).

What's the simplest and most contemporary way to frame art? No frame at all! The industry calls it a Gallery Wrap or a Museum Wrap. A Gallery Wrap has the image wrapped around the edges of the stretcher bars, and a Museum Wrap has white edges and the entire image is on the face of the stretched canvas. As you can see by the sample pictures here, this creates an even simpler and more contemporary art presentation than even the simplest black frame. Available at the Naked Wall Art Gallery as either a gallery wrap or a museum wrap, the canvases can still be framed in the future if styles and/or your tastes change or you decide you want a more traditional look. Be careful though, if you want the choice of future framing, not all galleries and web sites offer the right size stretcher bars for this option. The thickness of the sides makes all the difference. 3/4 inch thick stretcher bars allow for the option of framing, while the 1 1/2" think versions do not. Another issue to consider is the image itself - if the picture will hang where you cannot see the sides, then you may not want to loose any of the image to the sides - for some images this matters more than on other images. Framed Art Superstore Moved

Wow! What a month it's been. I've been missing from blogging due to a trip to New Hampshire to move the Framed Art Superstore to a new home. Here's the short story. We only moved to North Conway Village last October after 8 years on "the strip". We loved being part of North Conway Village, but we lost the lease on our space when the company we were sub-letting from terminated their lease. The building owner had no interest in leasing to us without a huge increase in rent. In order to remain a value-focused retailer, we needed to find affordable retail space.
We lucked out with the former Expressions Antiques at the south end of North Conway Village. Now, as of May 1st, we are all settled in and have even added a selection of antiques to our product mix.
The new store really lends itself to art, in that the building is an old house, each wall gets one picture, instead of having long retail walls in a gallery setting. This allows you to more easily visualize how a piece of art will look in your home, typically on a wall all by itself.

Vintage Advertising Posters

A little History Lesson on Posters

In the 15th century, posters were hand drawn and painted, so you can imagine the time and patience it would take to create even a few posters.

In 1628, a physician named Tehophraste Renaudot created the first advertising poster, displaying items available for sale.

The art of Lithography was invented by a Czech named Alois Senefelder in 1798 in Austria. By 1848, the process had been refined to the point that it was possible to print 10,000 sheers per hour, however, Jules Cheret was the first person to produce posters in mass through lithography.

1867 brought us the first poster for a play, depicting an actress in a play. Artistic commercial posters were born. Now we see advertising posters everywhere! The small are seen in store windows and the ultimate of large are displayed on billboards. Either way, they both have the same effect: Your business message to the masses.

Today you can enjoy vintage advertising posters as fine art on walls of your home or office. Our search for great contemporary canvas art continues. I just got off the phone with my sister in law who is working on a blog about horse health issues, so horses are top of mind. Horse art has always been popular for us, and I'm particularly impressed with two new art prints on canvas - (we call that a canvas transfer). The horse artist is Keren Leibrick and Strider I and Strider II are two great pieces of horse art. Karen Leibrick stands out with these two paintings, not just because the horses are beautiful, but the uplifting feel the art gives a room. It's amazing how you can hang a simple canvas transfer print on a naked wall, and suddenly you feel like sitting up straight with a little more energy!

Artist Stefano Ferreri Biography

After searching the Internet far and wide, I could not find a biography for Stefano Ferreri for anything! He's the amazing wine and martini artist we've been so crazy for, but I was beginning to wonder if the artist actually was real!

After emailing his publisher, I got the answer no other gallery bothered to seek out!

So here it is, the only place on the Internet with the biography of Stefano Ferreri!

Born in San Giovanni Valdarno in 1946, Stefano Ferreri uses his childhood in Tuscany as a constant source of inspiration in his paintings.

Ferreri developed an appreciation for the full bountiful potential of the land that was worked by people with great skill, vision, and patience. Enjoying wine and understanding the people that produced the great vintages were both part of the culture that surrounded Ferreri as a young man.
He was trained at a local Art Academy and has cultivated a technique that is realistic and also rich with brushstrokes. Wine has become a favourite subject for Ferreri as he has taken the cultural inspiration of his Tuscan roots and transformed the imagery into strikingly dramatic glimpses of the rituals and visual details that surround the drinking of fine wine. His painting style creates a new contemporary realism by utilizing deep rich colours, the play of light on glass and liquids, and very unusual perspectives.

Early in his career, Ferreri’s works became popular with food and wine connoisseurs who appreciated his masterly technique and his knowledge of the subject. However, in recent years a wide range of collectors from many different backgrounds and interests are interested in his work. Wine has a universal appeal, as it has throughout history. Ferreri’s paintings are displayed in many private and public collections in Italy, France, and Northern Europe. He has won several awards and competitions in Italy, and his popularity continues to now grow in North America.
